GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The trial of Eric Freeman, the only one of five men to go to trial in the beating death of Jonathan Krystiniak in January 2008, is now in the hands of the jury.
Just after noon Wednesday, the judge gave the jury their instructions and asked them to pick a foreman. The jury took a lunch break and then began deliberations.
They will decide Freeman's guilt or innocence, and have the option of considering charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter or assault with intent to do great bodily harm.
The jury went home Wednesday afternoon and will resume deliberations Thursday morning.
Krystiniak died from injuries he suffered when he was beaten outside the Margarita Grill. The other four men accused in his death earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Freeman chose to go to trial.
