Wrong-way driver dies, injures another

MUSKEGON, Mich (WOOD) - A wrong-way driver died after hitting another motorist head-on and sending that person to the hospital.

Around 7 a.m., Acklin Hoofman was travelling north on the southbound side of  US-31 just north of Sherman Boulevard. Hoofman, 75, of Muskegon Heights, collided head-on with a Jeep Liberty with his Ford pickup truck. The Liberty then hit another full-sized van that was also travelling south.

Hoofman died at the scene. The Liberty driver suffered minor injuries, and no one was hurt in the third vehicle.

The southbound lanes were closed between Apple and Sherman for a time, but re-opened around 9:15 a.m.
