ALLENDALE, Mich (WOOD) - Missile's Official. The Sunday beer and wine ban is over in
Ottawa County. The ban was lifted after people voted to can the law
this past election.
They were celebrating at the Main Street Pub Sunday.
Some are calling this day historical. A law more than three
decades old is now out the window and supporters hope to see more
cash flow coming into Ottawa County as a result.
"I fought that war... the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missle
Crisis and the Cold War so that we could have the freedom of having
a beer on Sunday if we wanted to and you know what? We just got
it," said David Johnson.
Up until Sunday in Ottawa County, there was no "Sunday
sippin'" at Main Street Pub in Allendale. At least not beer or
wine.
For the past 32 years bars in the county couldn't sell beer
or wine...but could sell hard liquor and mixed drinks.
And sometimes that meant if you were like Harold Smith, you
didn't come to the bar that was close to home.
"I used to have to go into Grand Rapids," said Harold Smith.
Taking his cash out of the county, Harold has hopes this change brings more to Ottawa County at a time when there's less everywhere.
Pub Owner Carol Devito came in on her day off to celebrate.
"I don't normally work on Sundays. Nope, but I had to be here... it's a little bit of history," said Devito.
David cracks open a Sunday afternoon Coors something that he thought he'd never be able to do in a town where people used to hide drinking alltogther.
"I was born here and I saw the people drinking in the garage," said Johnson.
The owner tells 24 Hour News 8 that she's seen sales on the downward spiral especially during the week but says she expects Sunday sales to double with the lift of the ban.
