Special election set for McCotter seat

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Lt. Gov. Brian Calley says a special primary election will be held Sept. 5 and a special general election Nov. 6 to fill the seat left vacant after U.S. Rep. Thad McCotter abruptly stepped down last week.
Calley made the announcement Tuesday. He's standing in for Gov. Rick Snyder, who's out of state.
McCotter resigned Friday from his 11th District seat in the Detroit suburbs. The move capped a political downfall that started after the Livonia Republican's campaign failed to submit enough valid petition signatures to get him on the ballot for re-election.
The winner of the special election would serve only until the end of this year. Candidates already are running Aug. 7 and Nov. 6 to win the seat for a two-year term starting in January.
