Millages, schools, proposals dominate the slate

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Here's a county-by-county look at the issues and proposals voters will decide on May 4. You can also go here to search for a sample ballot.

KENT COUNTY

Millage renewals and school board races dominate the Kent County slate for elections on May 4, though some other larger issues loom.

Among the highlights:

  • The city of Grand Rapids is asking for a tax increase, which would amend the city tax ordinance. The city is also seeking an amendment to the city charter that would allow the city to determine the length of a work day, which would allow more flexible scheduling;
  • East Grand Rapids is asking for a millage increase that would generate $1.1 million a year for operating expenses
  • Kenowa Hills asking for a $14.3 million bond for technology,bus and athletic improvements
  • Kentwood proposes a millage increase for their police and fire departments that would generate $4 million per year
  • Wyoming proposes a charter change for a tax increase for public safety that would generate $2.6 million per year.

There are also 21 school board races.

OTTAWA COUNTY

Voters in Ottawa County will decide 16 school board races and several school millage renewals when they go to the polls on May 4.

Among the decisions Holland voters will make are two school bond proposals. A $12.3 million bond would remodel a few specific buildings and a $60.8 million bond would remodel many buildings, athletic fields and upgrade buses.

In Zeeland, voters will decide whether to pass a $20.2 million bond for building a new elementary school plus other school work and upgrade technology and buses.

MUSKEGON COUNTY

Whitehall voters will decide on an $11.7 million bond proposal for buildings, buses and technology on May 4.

Other Muskegon County voters will determine 11 school board races and several other millage renewals.

KALAMAZOO COUNTY

Kalamazoo County voters will decide on bonds for schools and millages for law enforcement and fire when they go to the polls on May 4.

Five school board elections will take place, as well as two bond votes. The Colon Schools propose a $25 million bond for additions and remodeling, while the Kalamazoo school bonds requests $62 million for the same work.

A county-wide law enforcement and safety millage would restore an expired millage for six years to generate $12.1 million per year for the prosecutor, sheriff, courts and related offices.

And in Texas Township, a $335,000 per year millage is requested for improvements to the fire department.

ALLEGAN COUNTY

Perhaps the most controversial issue voters in Allegan County faced was the proposed tax increase in Saugatuck Township that would be used, at least in part, to fund the legal fight over development of the dunes owned by Aubrey McClendon.

By a two vote margin, township voters approved an additional millage for the legal fund

Or, the controversial issue could be the recall of several elected officials in Dorr Township.

Other Allegan County issues include 17 school board races, school renewals and proposals, and the election of members to the Wayland City Council.

NEWAYGO COUNTY

Six school board races and several millage renewals face the voters of Newaygo County on May 4.

MONTCALM COUNTY

In Montcalm County, seven school board races and two operating millages are on the May 4 ballot, along with school millages and bonds.

In Carson City, a $1.03 million bond for energy/technology improvements at schools is on the ballot. And the Central Montcalm schools want a millage to create a school repair fund of $292,000 per year.

MECOSTA COUNTY

In Mecosta County, there are two uncontested school board races, but two millage renewals that voters will address on May 4.

BARRY COUNTY

Three school board races and a few millage renewals face Barry County voters on May 4.

CALHOUN COUNTY

Eight school board races and two school bonds in Marshall are what voters will decide in Calhoun County on May 4.

In Marshall, one bond for $24.8 million would be used for school improvements, while the second $8.9 million bond would pay for a new high school auditorium.

VAN BUREN COUNTY

Voters in Van Buren County will decide 12 school board races and the fates of two school board members in Covert when they vote May 4.

Eleven school board races and a $26 million bond for the Colon schools are on the May 4 ballot in St. Joseph County.
