KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - A millage that expired was approved by Kalamazoo County voters Tuesday, a millage that will generate $12.1 million per year for six years for the prosecutor, sheriff, courts and related offices.
They also approved a $62 million Kalamazoo school bonds request for additions and remodeling.
The millage has been in place since 1980. Beyond the $12 million, the millage pays if 122 employees throughout the county, and funds roughly 37% of the sheriff's department. It pays the salaries of 60 corrections officers and two nurses.
Before the polls closed, Sheriff Richard Fuller spoke with 24 Hour News 8. "The important thing is that again 22 percent of the law enforcement budged is derived from the law enforcement renewal request and we're trying to maintain all the services we have already and not cut jobs."
The last time voters saw the millage on the ballot they passed it by a 3-1 margin.
