DETROIT (AP) - Virg Bernero has received the backing of fellow Democrat and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing in the race for Michigan governor.

Bing said Wednesday that he believes Bernero has the commitment and "experienced leadership" to help move Detroit and the state forward.

Bing also says "it will take a strong partnership" between Detroit and the new governor to bring about change in the economically challenged city.

Bernero has been Lansing mayor's for five years. He beat state House Speaker Andy Dillon in the August Democratic primary for governor and faces Republican Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder in the November general election.
