GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Bob Overbeek became the first candidate of either party to turn in enough signatures for a place on the ballot to fill Michigan's 3rd Congressional District seat being vacated by Vern Ehlers.
A Republican, Overbeek is a 31-year-old Grand Rapids native who is married and the father of three. He's an Air Force veteran of the Afghanistan war who holds a Masters in Nuclear Science and is finishing up a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard.
He turned in the 2,000 nominating signatures last week. In a statement, Overbeek said, “We are running a traditional grassroots campaign. My unpaid staff and volunteers are amazing. They hold the same values our founding patriots held."
Other Republicans in the field to replace Ehlers are Steve Heacock, Bill Hardiman and Justin Amash. Democrats Patrick Miles and Paul Mayhue have also announced their candidacies.
