Poll: Snyder widens lead on Bernero

EPIC-MRA poll between August 21-23, 2010

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Republican Rick Snyder has a 22-point lead over Democrat Virg Bernero in the race to become Michigan's next governor, a new EPIC-MRA poll shows.

Snyder, who on Wednesday named State Rep. Brian Calley to be his running mate, was named by 51% of the poll's respondents when asked who they would vote for if the election were held now.

Bernero garnered 29%, with 20% undecided.

When asked how certain they were on voting for the candidate of their choice, 52% said "very certain" and 31% were "mostly certain." Only 17% were "not certain at all and may change mind," with 0% undecided.

Name recognition is also going in Snyder's direction. Only 12% didn't recognize his name, and 48% had a favorable view of him. For Bernero, an equal number of respondents, 22%, didn't recognize his name and had a favorable view of him.

Voters seem motivated to go to the polls in November, as 79% said they are "extremely motivated" to vote, while only 4% said they were not motivated or not certain about voting.

But the abortion issue seems as if it won't play a major role in the campaign. While the respondents were exactly evenly split -- 45-45 -- on self-identification as pro-life or pro-choice, only 11% said a candidate's stance on abortion would be "a deciding factor" in how they cast their vote. The other responses ("Very important" 37%, "somewhat important" 26% and "not really all that important" 26%) filled the rest of the answers.

The poll of 600 voters was conducted for WOOD TV8 and our broadcast partners between August 21-23 and has a margin of error of 4%.
