GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Vernon Ehlers is endorsing a candidate in the race to succeed him in Congress.
The Grand Rapids Republican previously said he wouldn't offer an endorsement, but on Monday threw his support behind ex-Kent County Commissioner Steve Heacock.
While the news was welcome to the Heacock campaign, other candidates weren't as pleased.
State Sen. Bill Hardiman says he "took Congressman Ehlers at his word when he personally told me that he would stay out of the primary."
Other GOP candidates running for the 3rd District seat include state Rep. Justin Amash, Air Force veteran Bob Overbeek and lawyer Louise Johnson.
Two Democrats, Patrick Miles and Paul Mayhue, also are running in the August primary.
Ehlers announced in February he wouldn't run for the seat he's held for 16 years.
