DETROIT (AP) - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero has conceded the race to Republican businessman Rick Snyder.
Bernero told supporters in Detroit Tuesday night that "it was a fight worth fighting" but not his time. He says he called Snyder shortly before 10 p.m. to offer his full support.
Bernero had fought to stage a surprise win over Snyder, the better-funded Republican candidate and venture capitalist.
Bernero, the Lansing mayor, spoke at a Detroit casino hotel, where the Michigan Democratic Party was holding its election night gathering.
Three third-party candidates also ran.
Tuesday marked the first gubernatorial race since 2002 with no incumbent and the first since the Michigan economy was rocked by the near-collapse of two automakers.
