LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The two main candidates to become Michigan's next governor both say they'd make early childhood programs and education a priority if elected in November.
Democrat Virg Bernero and Republican Rick Snyder joined several hundred children, parents and others at an event billed as the Sandbox Party Convention at Michigan State University's Breslin Center.
The Thursday event was sponsored by the Early Childhood Investment Corp. to promote more state investment in programs aimed at having children ready to learn when they enter kindergarten.
Bernero and Snyder didn't offer many specifics in brief, separate speeches.
Bernero is the mayor of Lansing. Snyder is an Ann Arbor businessman.
