GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD)ei - The wear and tear on our joints can cause osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. Doctor James Lebolt, an orthopedic surgeon with Spectrum Health Medical Group shares some of the effects, symptoms and solutions for dealing with it. With osteoarthritis, the joint lining becomes pitted, eroded, uneven and painful. Bone spurs, or osteophytes, often form around the joint. Both of these conditions mean that common activities of daily living can become limited by extreme pain. Most of the people who have osteoarthritis are older than age 45, and women are more commonly affected than men. There are non-surgical alternatives for treatment such as lifestyle modification, weight control, exercise, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injection and joint fluid therapy. Surgical options can include total knee replacement. Attend a free seminar May 15 to learn more.
