GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - This is the time of year to cool off in the water whether it's in a pool, the big lake, or one of the many inland lakes and bodies of water in West Michigan. But with that kind of summer fun, there always comes a risk. Drowning happen year round and the rate of incidence increases greatly during the warm months. Doctor Allison Fabian of the Spectrum Health Medical Group has advice for navigating the dangers in and around the water. Inside your home, never eave babies or toddlers alone in around any body of water, even the bathtub or an open bucket. Drain the tub immediately after use. Keep toilet lids closed and use toilet seat locks. Outside, use gates four feet high around the pool in addition to door, gate and pool alarms. Cover and secure pools and spas when not in use. Remove or lock ladders for spas and above ground pools. Always watch children when around bodies of water, even if they know how to swim. Use appropriately fitting life jackets for children and adults unable to swim in pools and for all children and adults when boating or participating in water sports. Every adult caregiver should know CPR and all children and adults should learn how to swim and float with a life jacket on.
