GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Even if visiting hours don't resume until spring, operating a zoo is a 365 day a year operation. One of the critical parts of keeping one going is feeding the animals At John Ball Zoo, they recently upgraded the way its done. Rachael takes us off limits to show where zookeepers prepare the animals' meals and ensure they're getting proper nutrition all year round. It costs about $50,000 to feed the animals every year, including nearly $500 each week in just produce. Many schools and organizations have fund raising events and food drives to help offset the costs. You can contact the John Ball Zoo if you're interested in doing something like that to help. The John Ball Zoo opens this spring opening is March first. The summer grand opening is May 12th.
