The insider's guide to Winter Beer Fest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Belly up to the 8th Annual Michigan Brewers Guild Winter Beer Festival at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park. This popular event sold out in a record 13 minutes this year, so consider yourself lucky if you scored a ticket.  West Michigan mom and blogger Kelli Williams has attended the event for the past few years and has put together some words of advice for first timers. Kelli's tips come courtesy of her blog Momma Needs A Beer.

What to wear
This is an outdoor event in the dead of winter, so dress warm! The guys typically outnumber the girls, therefore, Winter Beer Fest is not much of a fashion show. Dress like you're going skiing with snow pants, boots, maybe even long-underwear. Also remember to dress for the porta-jons. You will be drinking about 15 "tastes" of beer, so bibs may not be the best idea. Snow pants or fleece-lined jeans that are easy to pull on and off are ideal.

What will I drink?
There is an incredible beer list with new brews popping up daily on Michigan Brewing Guild's Blog.
Print out that beer list and circle the ones you absolutely must try and hit up. With 6,000 beer enthusiasts and 500 beers, the good ones are sure to run out fast.

You will receive 15 tokens and a cup when you arrive. Most of the 3oz samples will cost you one token. However, this year for the first time, certain breweries have decided to offer two or three token beer samples.

There is something for everyone. If you're not a big beer drinker, there are ciders as well as a variety of sour and fruit-infused beer. Or, if you love chocolate or coffee, there are different stouts to try.

What do I bring with me?
First and foremost remember your ID. They need to know you're 21!  Secondly, remember your ticket. The festival has been sold out since they went on sale, so if you don't bring your ticket, you can't get in. Another things to consider are folding chairs and even snacks. They will have food available from vendors, but you can bring your own too.

What about transportation?
There is alcohol-breath testing available at Winter Beer Fest and designated drivers get in for only $5.  But, to be safe, I recommend taking a cab to and from the event.
