Makeover your home with easy changes

GRANDVILLE, Mich. Rearrange your mantel

• Create height and levels to catch the eye.  This can be done with candles, vases, books or other accent pieces.
• Think about a piece of artwork or a mirror above the mantel.  It's a nice centerpiece and you can build other accents around the room that compliment it.
• Balance is important.  Look for items that you can place on both sides to keep the look even.

Integrate vibrant accessories

• Something as simple as new throw pillows can make a big difference.
• Incorporate bright colors, solids and patterns in complimentary colors.
• A large area rug is a good way to bring a new pattern in the room.
• Window treatments are a fun way to try a new color or to brighten up the room.

Flooring options

• Replacing carpet can make a room look entirely different.
• Look for carpet in medium tones that have texture.
• If re-doing a kitchen or bathroom, think about tile over wood.  Tile is more practical for families and easier to replace than hardwood.

Making a splash

• If you are looking to update your kitchen the backsplash is a creative way. 
• Find a fun tile to use such as glass, which is currently a big trend.
