GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - If your legs are a part of your body that you would like to have look better because of unsightly spider or varicose veins, Dr. Jason Slaikeu, a vascular surgeon with the Spectrum Health Medical Group i s ready to help. People who are at risk of developing these conditions often spend much of their time on their feet, have a family history of varicose veins, are of increasing age or are experiencing pregnancy. Symptoms may or not be present, but if they are they may include aching, heaviness, burning, tiredness, pain, and swelling and itching over the prominent veins. Symptoms tend to worsen when standing or sitting in place for prolonged periods of time. While spider and varicose veins are not usually not dangerous, they can be a sign of a deeper problem and can lead to other health problems including ulcers, discoloration and swelling. To prevent and treat them doctors recommend leg elevation, exercise and maintaining a healthy weight, avoidance of prolonged standing or sitting, wearing compression stockings and procedures such as sclerotherapy, radio frequency ablation and laser therapy,. Most treatment is done on an outpatient basis and varicose veins are recognized as a medical condition that is covered by many insurance plans.
