GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Now the the snow is flying, why not try new things to enjoy the season? Snowshoeing is a great option not just because it gets us outside, but also because it's a fun sport if you're vowing to get fit in the new year. Rachael traveled to Hastings in early 2012 to give it a go with Matt Dykstra of the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute. They've been open longer than a decade and offer 660 acres of land with seven miles of trails. You can rent snowshoes for just five dollars all winter and if you can walk, you can snowshoe! What a great way to enjoy Mother Nature and get some exercise with the whole family. There is a great event on January 25 to get you started. It's a moonlight snowshoe tour from 7 to 9 p.m. and it's free for members. Non-members pay just six dollars. Hot chocolate and treats are available at the visitor center following the event. In addition to snowshoeing, many people cross country ski at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute. It's open year round and the facility's free to use, but the institute does appreciate it when people become members to help fund programs and special events. Make a plan to visit in the new year.
