GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - It seems we're hearing more and more about young athletes getting injured, often with things like concussions, which are a real concern. Doctor Matthew Axtman is a Sports Medicine Specialist with the Spectrum Health Medical Group and Docotor Michael Lawrence is a Neuropsychologist with the program. They have information and tips to share about concussions. Both suggest that having a baseline screening is a good place to start. Cognitive evaluations allow for a baseline screening assessment of athlete's basic cognitive functioning. In the event of concussion, this service will be able to monitor recovery over time through repeated testing, comparing the athlete's post-concussion performance to baseline. A twenty to thirty minute test can be taken for just $20. The doctors also discourage student athletes to wear protective gear when playing sports like soccer. Keep in mind that the majority of persons who suffer a concussion recover within seven days. Those who have sustained concussion are at a much higher risk of experiencing subsequent concussion. After three concussions, there's an increased risk for concussion reoccurrence, lengthier recovery time and long-term risk later in life for depression and Alzheimer's Disease. High school athletes experience more concussions and recover at a slower rate than college and professional athletes. No athlete should go back to their sport if they are still experiencing concussion symptoms. Return to play should be progressive from light aerobic exercise, to sport specific training, then non-contact drills, contact drills, and last, game play. Neuropsychological tests are one of the cornerstones of concussion evaluation.
