PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) - Unemployment numbers in West Michigan are currently at record lows, but there are still many looking for jobs this holiday season. Emily Turner of our Ask the Expert for staffing OnStaff USA shares tips for both employers and employees to help both get the fit they are looking for.

For the employee, it is important to be prepared for the job you are applying for:

1.       Know about the company

2.       Be prepared for the interview

3.       Have a well written resume

4.       Dress for success when interviewing

5.       Follow up on your interview - write a thank you note

6.       Network for positions - don't just search the web

7.       Be open to contract and temp positions.  Both are ways into a company

8.       Remember not to discuss money on the first interview.  Be open to negotiate

For the employer, keep in mind that talent is hard to find in this competitive market place.  Employers must be willing to look at every avenue when recruiting:

1.       Have a variety of sources to recruit from

2.       Have a detailed job description that you can be flexible from

3.       Look at positions from a variety of directions such as contract, temp to hire and direct hire to ensure you are seeing all candidates

4.       Review the compensation regularly
