GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - It's Fat Tuesday and bakeries around West Michigan have been busy preparing thousands of paczki's. Paczki's are delicious polish donuts that are stuffed with fruit filling and traditionally eaten on Fat Tuesday.
They were originally eaten in Poland on the last Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The traditional reason for making paczki's was to use up all the lard, sugar, eggs and fruit in the house, because their consumption was forbidden by Catholic fasting practices during Lent. At around 400 calories a piece, these fried treats, are definitely an sweet indulgence.
Today the consuming of paczki's is still a tradition that bakeries gear up for. The folks at D&W and Family Fare aren't messing around and bring in extra bakers to help make enough paczki's for the day. The stores open at 6 a.m. and people will be lining up.
