GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - It may be surprising to know that nearly 2.2 million Americans suffer from epilepsy.  In West Michigan, the Spectrum Health Medical Group has a team establishing a comprehensive program for both children and adults living with epilepsy.  Dr. Kost Elisevich shares what is the first program in West Michigan to be designated a Level 4 epilepsy center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). Level 4 is the highest designation established by the NAEC and indicates a fully integrated, comprehensive epilepsy program.  The inpatient epilepsy monitoring units at Spectrum Health are equipped to help physicians gain information about seizures. The adult epilepsy monitoring unit is located in Butterworth Hospital and the pediatric unit is located in Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. Dual cameras closely watch patients' facial features and eye movements.  The doctors also do "brain mapping" to determine the locations of key brain functions so they can avoid them during surgery.
