GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The kitchen is a gathering place for families, friends and social gatherings. It is easily the most popular room in the home and one of the most commonly remodeled. When it comes to remodeling, many people don't properly plan and make small mistakes that can cost lots of time and money.
Rachael stopped by Dreamaker Bath and Kitchen to get some insights on completing a successful kitchen remodel including four common mistakes to avoid.
1. Mistake 1: Tackling the project in the wrong order. It's important to look at your kitchen as one large project and then determine the best order to redo things. Often times people are excited to get started and jump in before they take the time to think about the process. For example, don't redo your flooring, if you will be replacing the lower cabinets in a few years. You want to avoid having to do things twice.
2. Mistake 2: Not investing in quality cabinets. If you're looking for a place to cut costs, don't do it on the cabinets. The kitchen cabinets are used everyday and take lots of wear and tear over time. It's important to use a quality solid wood, that won't need to be replaced in a few years.
3. Mistake 3: Trying to do too much yourself. Sometimes it's best to call in the pros on remodeling projects. Many people want to cut costs and do it themselves, but when it comes to things like cabinetry, tiling and lighting, it takes a skilled tradesman to get it correct.
4. Mistake 4: Be realistic with your budget. It's important to get estimates on the work you need done and do the proper pre-planning so you don't end up over budget.
