Learning about end of life care options

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Holland Home has been serving seniors in Grand Rapids for 120 years. The nursing facility provides the full continuum of care from independent and assisted living to skilled nursing and respite care.

It's not always easy to talk about, but if you have a family member who's very sick or dying, it's important to consider end of life care options. At Holland Home they offer both Palliative and Hospice Care for those who are suffering and facing a limited prognosis illness.

Palliative Care is nursing care of those who are living with an incurable illness, such as cancer, Parkinson's Disease or Cystic Fibrosis. This care is long term and aimed to help relief the burden of suffering the patients. The goal is to improve the patients quality of life, providing comfortable rooms with a home-life feel.

Hospice Care on the other hand, is for someone who has a terminal illness and will pass in a short period of time. There is a skilled team of professionals, including doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains that are able to serve the patient and make them comfortable in their final days.
