MUSKEGON, MI (WOODTV) -
Muskegon is seeing unprecedented need for shelter, food and clothing. The slow economy and continued high unemployment have contributed to the record need.
The Muskegon Rescue Mission has been serving the Muskegon community for 105 years. They provide meals and shelter for men, women and children. Services also include a food pantry for groceries, personal care items and clothing.
The number of people seeking shelter is 24% greater than this point last year. The number of meals served in the shelter is up 58%. The food pantry has also seen an increase of over 80%.
Due to the record need at the shelter, they are appealing to the community for help. The Mission is not funded through grants or government budgets, but from donors in the community.
Besides for monetary gifts, the mission is looking for items that would complete a meal like canned meats, sauces and peanut butter. They also need personal care items like diapers and formula.
