Grand Rapids, MI (WOOD) - A visible and vocal icon from our Community passed away January 23rd. Ella Mary Sims has been involved in the Grand Rapids community for decades.
Born in Sumner, Mississippi on December 24th, 1923, she then migrated to West Michigan in the 1940's. She was the first African American woman to write a weekly colum in the Grand Rapids Press during the 1970's. It was called..."It seems to me..." She wrote about her thoughts on the different issues of the day at a time when hardly anyone of color had a voice in the established newspaper. She is remembered for many accomplishments and a mentor to many...

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1 at True Light Missionary Baptist Church. Community reflections will begin at 6 p.m.
A celebration of life service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Baptist church.
