GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The Salvation Army is hoping West Michigan can make one last push to help the organization reach its Christmas Campaign goal.
The group has already raised more than $853,000, which is 57 percent of its $1.5 million goal, according to a news release.
The Salvation Army is experiencing a sharp increase in requests from thousands of area families who need assistance at Christmas and throughout the year.
"The Salvation Army continues to be committed to serving the needs of the West Michigan community throughout the year, and we are hopeful that the citizens of Grand Rapids will support The Salvation Army through our Red Kettle Campaign," said Major Ralph Hansen, Kent County coordinator. "With the increased need throughout the year, we are again looking to our community to help us meet our goal of $1.5 million. I am certain that West Michigan will help us fulfill our commitment to serve those who depend on us to meet their need every day of the year."
Donations collected during Christmas will be used to serve thousands of area families with food, toys, clothing and special assistance during the Christmas season. Funds will also be used throughout the coming year to provide vital human services to the homeless and those facing eviction, assistance with utility and other critical expenses, care and support for young teen parents, rehabilitation for those struggling with addictions, recreational and character building programs for youth and adults, along with a variety of programs offered to Kent County residents every day.
You can support these programs by contributing in red kettles at various businesses, calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY, donating online or by sending gifts directly to --
