ArtPrize Short List may benefit small venues

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The first weekend of ArtPrize 2012 voting is coming to a close. On Monday, ArtPrize organizers will unveil a Short List of works that you can't miss.

That Short List is new this year -- and for some venues, it's a chance to get more visitors.

"The Short List" will air Monday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on WOOD TV8.

It will include the Top 25 based on the public vote, along with the Top 5 critics' choices in five categories: 2D art, 3D art, time/performance, urban space and outstanding venue.

For outlying venues, those juried nominations could be a big difference.

At venues like the City Art Gallery near Leonard Street and Division Avenue in Grand Rapids, artists were antsy Sunday before the big announcement. If the venue or even any artwork at outlying venues catches the judges' eyes, it could mean bigger crowds.

"Hopefully, that's what we have: An artist in one of those categories. That would be great. It would get more people out there, but it would also show that some of the smaller venues have great work," Pam Weston of the City Art Gallery told 24 Hour News 8.

On Sept. 30, the Top 10 finalists for the public vote will be revealed during a 1 p.m. event in Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids. That announcement will be streamed live on woodtv.com.

The winners of ArtPrize 2012 will be announced in a one-hour special Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. on WOOD TV8.
