Ran Ortner wins ArtPrize, $250K

Brooklyn.-based painter created Open Water No. 24

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The winner of the weeks-long ArtPrize competition and $250,000 is Brooklyn, N.Y.-based painter Ran Ortner, who created Open Water No. 24, showing at the Old Federal Building.

    The top 10 winners, in order, are:

    1.) Ran Ortner, Open Water No. 24
    2.) Tracy Van Duinen, Imagine That!
    3.) Eric Daigh, Portraits
    4.) David Lubbers, The Grand Dance
    5.) Bill Secunda, Moose
    6.) Nessie Project, Nessie on the Grand
    7.) John Douglas Powers, Field of Reeds
    8.) Sarah Grant, The Furniture City Sets the Table for the World of Art
    9.) Jason Hackenwerth, Ecstacy of the Scarlett Empress
    10.) Michael Westra, Winddancer 2

    Voting for the top 10 wrapped up Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. More than 332,000 votes were cast since the competition began.

    Everyone in the top 10 won at least $7,000. The artist in third place received $50,000, and the second-place artist won $100,000.

    The announcement was made at DeVos Place in the Steelcase Ballroom. The doors opened at 6 p.m. and entertainment began at 7 p.m.

    All of the ArtPrize entries will remain in place through Saturday.
