Kyle Underwood, Meteorologist
Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Kyle Underwood has been forecasting Great Lakes weather for more than a decade.
Kyle grew up in Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) and continued to study meteorology at Mississippi State University. He holds the seals of approval from the American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association.
Breaking into broadcasting at 16, Kyle was a radio DJ at KBEK in Mora, Minnesota. He spun CDs on the weekends and that led to another radio job -- at a Top 40 station -- in Duluth while attending college.
While a senior in college in 2001, Kyle was hired as the weekend weather anchor at WDIO-TV in Duluth. He eventually served as WDIOs chief meteorologist from 2005-2008, where his work earned him an Edward R. Murrow award, and Eric Sevareid award and an Emmy nomination.
Kyle came to West Michigan and WOOD-TV in 2008 as the weekend meteorologist. In 2012, Kyle added the duties of Storm Team 8's Weather Executive Producer, managing weather content across all platforms. He forecasts the weather Sunday nights and Monday through Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Aside from a love for all things up in the sky, Kyle takes his camera with him almost everywhere. His photography has been published in Lake Superior Magazine, a few calendars and travel guides in Northern Minnesota, and he was recently selected for showings at Green Well Restaurant in Grand Rapids, and Starbucks in Duluth and East Grand Rapids.
