24 Hour News 8’s Steve Kelso did not take the typical route to becoming a reporter.

Steve joined 24 Hour News 8 in March 2000 as Chief Photographer and served in that position for the next four years before being promoted to Assignment Manager.

During a breaking news situation Steve found himself on the air from the desk reporting the first news of Aero Med crashing into Spectrum Hospital. In June 2010 Steve was asked to return to the streets as a one man crew.

He shoots, writes and edits almost all of his own stories. “It’s as if all of the things I have done in a 25-plus-year career led me to this point. I don’t take for granted for one second what a tremendous honor it is to tell people’s stories.”

Steve has also spent time as a special projects producer for WOOD TV8. In 2006 he produced WOOD TV8’s coverage of the Winter Olympics from Torino Italy.

Prior to joining 24 Hour News 8 Steve was in charge of news operations at WHOI TV in Peoria, served as Chief Photographer at WNDU TV in South Bend and produced special projects at WWMT.

He has received numerous awards from the Associated Press, The Society of Professional Journalists and the National Press Photographers Association for his photography. He is a Past President of the Michigan Television News Photographers Association.

Steve lives in Grand Rapids with his wife Christine, who is the Executive Producer of eightWest.

In his spare time Steve enjoys playing guitar, is an avid motorcyclist, a frustrated golfer, a proficient juggler and recovering Deadhead.
